![]() ![]() I’m a big fan of historical mysteries and I was thinking about a topic and noticed a book of Emily Dickinson’s poems on my shelf. An editor suggested a novel about a teen Victoria would be fun (she was right!). My mother recommended Beryl Markham (she is a private pilot). Michaela MacColl: I’ve come to each book differently. ![]() What sort of research did you conduct as a part of your preparation? ![]() I’m curious how you chose the unique protagonists you created in Beryl Markham, Queen Victoria, and Emily Dickinson. A former resident of France and Russian history expert, she’s a fascinating person and such a gem to share with our TCBR readers. Her award-winning books include Prisoners in the Palace, Promise the Night, and her most recent novel Nobody’s Secret. When she came across Michaela MacColl’s captivating novel Promise the Night, I was relieved she had found an author who captured her imagination yet wasn’t “too babyish.” What a distinct pleasure it is to interview Michaela for The Children’s Book Review. His experiences remain as sharp and telling today as they were twenty-five years ago - from the timeless secrets of life, learned from a mountain-dwelling hermit, to the stir he caused by staying with a black family in North Carolina, to his hours of intense labor in Southern mills. "I started out searching for myself and my country," Peter Jenkins writes, "and found both." Willard’s son is Arvin ( Michael Banks Repeta), and the first section of the film takes place when Arvin is nine. When Willard looks up at the cross in the woods outside his house, one senses he can still see horror in an image of faith. His particular trauma has been melded with faith in part because of the day he came upon a man in the Pacific theater of the war who had literally been crucified, his bloody body still barely alive on a cross. Willard Russell ( Bill Skarsgård) returns home to Knockemstiff, Ohio from World War II, carrying the heavy weight of PTSD. You see-how can a reader fully understand the situation of a kidnapping scene without knowing about the breasts of the mother of the kidnapped girl? At least, as a guy, I can excuse the impartial observer who notices mommy's abundant breasts-he's got no skin in the game, after all. Worry not, intrepid reader!
